Matthew Smeal was born in Sydney, Australia in 1970. The son of a film producer he developed an interest in film production, which led to the study of cinematography and work in television. Finding that time alone with a camera was more creative than time spent with a film crew Matthew switched to photography and works within the tradition of 'Straight Photography', defined by pioneers including Ansel Adams, Edward Weston and Brett Weston. As a surfer and general lover of the ocean, water and the coastal environment is a recurring theme throughout Matthew's work; it is also the environment Matthew is hoping to protect by drawing people's attention to its beauty in its natural and unaltered state. A strong faith in God is also reflected in Matthew's work as he highlights an intimate earth as it was provided for us; a world that we continue to pollute and irreversibly alter. Matthew uses a medium format camera to produce negatives in a 6cm x 7cm format for excellent sharpness and resolution. He hand-prints each image onto 8x10 or 11x14 silver gelatin fibre-based photographic paper and tones the print in selenium to further enhance the image and for archival permanence. All prints are signed and numbered by Matthew with each image size limited in edition to 100. Click here to order prints or for any other information. |
